'Last one in the water is a chicken!'

by John
(Fife)

'Last one in the water is a chicken!'

'Last one in the water is a chicken!'

This is taken at Birnie Loch nearby to the village of Collessie (between Cupar and Auchtermuchty. Birnie Loch is a nature reserve created from the restored Kinloch Quarry and was donated to the people of Fife by the family firm of JS Baird & Sons in association with Pioneer Aggregates (UK) Ltd.

It was opened on the 7th June 1991 by Mrs John Baird. The name Birnie Loch was chosen by Carol-Lyn Crawford of Ladybank Primary School.

The walk right round the Loch is something you must do. I remember on several occasions seeing beautiful large Dragonflies. The walk is not very long and is on flat ground making it ok for those who like to take their time.

Ducks are one of my favorite birds- they are calm on top whilst paddling like crazy underneath! How well they express our human behaviour!

Here they are all gathered together waiting for someone to shout 'Ok folks..last one in the water is a chicken!'..then comes the mad rush, for no Duck likes to be called 'chicken'.

Love it!

Thanks for sharing this delightful picture and story about Birnie Loch. The scene is great and of course it reminds me of Fife's mining history, but this has been a wonderful idea to turn the old colliery into a wildlife man-made loch.

I think they're waiting for their dinner from some kind-hearted human!
