 Worth a try

I have had a meal with friends and family here a good few times, and almost every single time it was exceptionally good service.

However, around the last time I went was for my Mum's birthday, and some friends of mine from Edinburgh came through as well - I'd told them how great it was. On that occasion, the service was terrible, took a long while between the starters, mains and sweet, I mean literally took over two hours - and then because another booking for that table area later on that night had arrived while we were just getting the sweets due to the very slow service, one of the waiting staff started go daft about us right beside our table to a co worker - was quite embarrassing really.

All in all, if at all possible try not to book this place on nights that are most likely to be quite busy such as a Saturday night, and you should be fine - the food is exceptionally good for the most part.

Have been going to the Red Lion for the last 8 years and NEVER EVER had a bad meal or poor service and again last night I went with my family visiting from overseas, and they raved about it. Keep up the good work.

Since 2006 I have visited my friend & her family & friends at least once a year. Each time I'm over, we make a point of going to the Red Lion because I always ask them if we can go to the Red Lion. None of us have ever had a poor meal there. In fact, I love the steak pie so much that I have it every time we go. And I will have it again when I'm over during the last 2 weeks of Sept.

 disappointed

We have dined on a few occasions before and been satisfied.This evening however we were very disappointed with a few aspects that did not come up to scratch.The appearance of some of the young staff was scruffy and not up to dining room standards.One member of staff was discussing loudly about a large party of diners from the night before who paid a large bill and only tipped a few pounds.On ordering the special 3 course meal deal the fillet steak was grissly and of poor quality, and when asked what liquer coffees were available the member of staff said just look along the bar.On the whole very disappointing, and there did not seem to be a senior member of staff working.

Hi John
Thanks for sharing your experience. I know that, generally speaking, the Red Lion has a good reputation. Indeed, I went there about a year ago and my husband had the Fish and Chips, and it was delicious, with lovely crisp batter. Maybe it depends on the chef.

But, as you say - it is a nice pub with a good atmosphere.
