Scottish recipe against a Sore Throat

by Dr. Ellen Schmidt
(Aberdeenshire, Scotland)

Working as a large animal veterinary surgeon in all weather conditions in the rough countryside of Aberdeenshire, I have been affected with all forms of sore throats. My lovely farmer clientele, suffering from the very same symptoms, told me dozens of recipes to enhance the pain.... one worked particularly well:

Portion size: 1 big mug

Ingredients:

water
1-2 Tablesp. apple vinegar
a good shot of Scottish whiskey
1 Tablesp. honey

Method:

Boil water in kettle.
In meantime put vinegar, honey and whiskey into the mug.
Pour hot, boiled water onto it, stir and drink as hot as possible..... and enjoy!

Spell it right!!
by: Mikey B

C'mon everyone! A good Scot knows you spell it 'whisky'. 'Whiskey' means the Irish stuff.

Looking for the next sore throat :)
by: Rita

I need to go and get me some apple vinegar. I think the "good shot of Scottish whiskey" is already in stock.

It works!
by: Katie

Have a very sore throat - so when I read this I decided to try it out. It really was very soothing on the throat. Have heard of the Hot Toddy with whisky and honey, but the apple vinegar must have some medicinal effect.
Thanks for this.

A timely suggestion
by: SMS

I've a friend who'd benefit from this just now - it sounds like a variation on a hot toddy/toddie?? Its a good time to share this one with this cold snap we're having and preparing for these cold winter nights that are heading our way.

Sounds like a sore throat is something to be welcomed!
by: Edwyn -from Fife

Ellen - I like the 'good shot of Scottish Whiskey'and the 'big mug'. At time of writing I have a head cold, but 'sadly' no sore throat! However I may test the remedy in any case! Thank you for sharing that very Scottish remedy with us.
