Where I Shop For The Best Camera Equipment In Edinburgh

I’ve spent countless weekends roaming Edinburgh’s streets, hunting for the perfect camera gear. Over time, I’ve uncovered a vibrant world of shops from big-name outlets to tiny hidden gems offering vintage treasures.
This guide is my honest walkthrough of the best camera equipment stores in Edinburgh. I'll share what makes each shop special, insider tips on steals and deals, and how to match the right store to your needs. If you're looking to buy, rent, repair, or just check out camera kit in Edinburgh, this is the guide you'd wished existed!

1. Wex Photo Video (Leith Walk)

Location: Unit 4, 39 Haddington Place, Edinburgh, EH7 4AG (Leith Walk area)
Wex Photo Video (Leith Walk)
Wex Photo Video (Leith Walk)
Wex Photo Video in Leith is usually my first stop when I need something important. It’s one of the biggest camera shops in Edinburgh, and they have a huge range of equipment. I’m talking about all the big brands Canon, Sony, Nikon, Fujifilm, Panasonic and loads of lenses, lights, bags, and tripods.
It easily stands out as one of the top shops for camerasin the city, especially if you want expert help and plenty of choices. But what makes Wex special is their services. You can try out demo gear, which means you can test a lens or camera before you decide to buy it.
I’ve done this myself a few times it’s saved me from buying things that didn’t quite suit my shooting style. They also offer camera and lens rentals, which is great if you need something for a short project or a weekend trip. I once rented a full-frame mirrorless kit here and it was quick and affordable.
Tip:After buying something, ask for their free 30-minute setup session. I did this with my last mirrorless body, and the staff helped me get the best settings and even showed me shortcuts I didn’t know existed.

2. Jessops (Castle Street)

Location:8 Castle Street, Edinburgh, EH2 3AT
Jessops castle street
Jessops castle street
Jessops on Castle Street is one of the last remaining branches in Scotland, and I still pop in from time to time. It’s right in the city centre, just a short walk from Princes Street, which makes it convenient if you’re already shopping nearby.
They focus on entry-level to mid-range gear. You’ll find popular brands like Canon, Sony, and Nikon, and they usually have good bundle offers if you’re buying your first camera.
What I like here is the friendly staff. They’re always happy to explain how things work, which is great if you’re just starting or switching to a new camera system.
They also offer finance options, price matching, and a small used section with affordable finds. Once, I picked up a decent compact camera here for under £50 it still works great.
Tip:If you’re unsure about something, just ask. The staff are approachable, and they often do quick in-store demos.

3. Cameratiks / Camerabase (Morningside Road)

Location:120-122 Morningside Road, Edinburgh, EH10 4BX
If you’re into film photography or looking for something vintage or unique, you’ll love Cameratiks in Morningside. This is one of the most charming camera shops I’ve ever stepped into. It’s smaller and more personal than the big chains, but that’s exactly why I love it.
They stock a range of used gear film cameras, digital compacts, DSLRs, old lenses, tripods, and accessories. The prices are fair, and you can often negotiate a little if you're buying multiple items or something older.
What stands out here is the staff. They’re passionate, knowledgeable, and not pushy at all. I once spent nearly an hour chatting with the owner about vintage Nikon lenses and didn’t feel rushed at all. It’s the kind of place where Scottish photographersoften stop by, not just to shop, but to talk photography and share knowledge.
Tip:They sometimes get rare items, so it’s worth visiting often or calling ahead if you’re hunting for something specific.

4. Calumet Photographic (now Part Of Wex - Bonnington)

Location:Unit 3 (or 3 Bonnington Business Centre), Tennant Street, Leith, Edinburgh, EH6 5HG
This store used to be Calumet, but it’s now part of the Wex brand and still operates with the same high standards. It’s based in Bonnington, so it’s a bit more tucked away than the central stores but if you’re a professional or advanced amateur, it’s worth the trip.
They carry high-end gear, especially from brands like Canon and Nikon, and they’re one of the few places that still feel like a proper “pro shop.”
The store also offers rental services and has a good reputation for helping people working in the photography industry. When I was shooting a client portrait project, I got all my lighting gear sorted here quick and smooth.

5. Ffordes Photographic (Online, But With Strong Presence In Edinburgh)

Location: Based in Beauly, Inverness‑shire, IV4 7BQ (The Kirk, Wester Balblair)
Ffordes isn’t based in Edinburgh it’s up north in Beauly but they ship fast and have a big reputation among Scottish photographers. I include them here because they’ve saved me more than once when I needed something specific.
They focus on used and rare camera gear, especially manual lenses, rangefinders, and even large format setups. If you love Leica, Nikon AI, or Contax gear, you’ll find a lot to like.
What sets them apart is the depth of their stock. Once, I was looking for a macro bellows system for my old Nikon F3, and Ffordes was the only shop in the UK that had one in perfect shape.
They also do next-day delivery, which makes them a good choice even if you’re based in Edinburgh.
Tip:Check their website regularly. Their listings change often, and the best items don’t stay long.

6. LCE - London Camera Exchange (Edinburgh)

Location: No public Edinburgh retail store; nearest branches require postcode lookup
I stumbled across LCE in Edinburgh when I was looking for a second-hand lens, and now it’s one of my favourite spots to check in on regularly. It’s not as large or modern-looking as Wex, but it’s packed with both new and used gear and run by people who understand photography.
The thing that stands out to me most about LCE is their honesty and practicality. When I was torn between two lenses one older and half the price of the other the staff didn’t push me to get the newer one. They explained the pros and cons clearly and even let me try both out. I walked away with the cheaper lens and absolutely no regrets.
They’ve got a good trade-in system too. I traded in an old DSLR body and used the credit to pick up a compact mirrorless that I still carry around for travelphotography.
Tip:Don’t be shy to ask if they’ve got gear that’s not on display. Sometimes they keep extra stock in the back, especially used items waiting to be tested or cleaned.

7. Harrison Cameras (Online With Fast UK Shipping)

Location: Fully online UK retailer with nationwide delivery
While Harrison Cameras is based down in Sheffield, they’ve earned a spot on this list because I’ve ordered from them multiple times, and the service has always been solid. For anyone in Edinburgh who doesn’t mind online shopping, this is a great option for hard-to-find accessories, film stock, and used gear.
I remember ordering a used Samyang wide-angle lens from Harrison when no one else in Scotland had one. Their product description was detailed, the price was fair, and they shipped it out the same day. It arrived in great condition, carefully packed, and ready to go.
They also carry things like camera straps, flashguns, filters, and specialist film, all things that smaller Edinburgh shops may not have on hand.
Tip:Their used section gets updated regularly, and if you follow them on social media, you’ll sometimes spot flash sales or discount codes for online orders.

8. MPB (Online, But Frequently Used By Edinburgh Photographers)

Location:Online marketplace for used camera gear no physical Edinburgh address
MPB is entirely online, but I’ve used them so many times it feels like part of my local camera circle. They specialise in second-hand gear, and their website makes it easy to buy, sell, or trade. Every item is photographed individually, so you know exactly what you’re getting.
I’ve bought a mirrorless body, sold an old Canon 70-200mm lens, and even swapped an entry-level DSLR for store credit all through MPB. What I like is how simple and transparent their system is. They grade gear from “Like New” to “Well Used,” and in my experience, they’re honest about what’s working and what’s not.
Shipping is fast, returns are easy, and their team is responsive. For those of us in Edinburgh who can’t always find exactly what we need in-store, MPB is a reliable alternative.
Tip:If you’re trading gear, opt for store credit it usually comes with a slightly better value than cash.

9. Camera Obscura Gift Shop (Royal Mile)

Location:549 Castlehill, The Royal Mile, Edinburgh, EH1 2ND
Now, this is not your traditional camera store, but I had to include it because I once picked up a really fun Lomography-style film camera here while browsing after a museum visit. The gift shop attached to the Camera Obscura & World of Illusions is full of quirky and creative camera-related items.
They carry pinhole cameras, instant film gadgets, toy cameras, and even lensball kits. It’s a great place to pick up something fun for kids or to spark your creative photography projects.
If you’re interested in lo-fi photography or looking for a gift for a camera lover, this shop is worth checking out. It’s not a place to get professional gear, but for creative tools and novelty items, it’s brilliant.
Tip:Visit during quiet hours (mornings are best) so you can browse without the tourist rush.

10. The Real Camera Company (Online)

Location:No physical Edinburgh presence, fully online retail only
I came across The Real Camera Company while looking for a film SLR camera online. Based in England, they offer vintage, second-hand, and classic gear the kind of stuff you’d normally only find at specialist collectors’ shops.
I ended up ordering a Nikon FM2 body and a 50mm f/1.8 manual lens from them, and both were in great condition. They’d even loaded the camera with a test roll of film to check everything was working. That kind of care is hard to find these days.
What sets them apart is how much effort they put into describing condition and testing old gear. If you’re into film photography or building a retro setup, they’re a reliable choice.
Tip:If you’re ordering more than one item, email them directly they sometimes offer combined shipping or bundle discounts.

11. Fotospeed (Specialist Printing & Colour Tools - Online)

Location:Online-only based in Alton, Hampshire;
Fotospeed isn’t a place I’d go to for cameras, but they’ve been incredibly useful to me when I started printing my photography at home. Based in the UK, they’re one of the few places where you can get professional-quality paper, colour calibration tools, and printer inks without having to search overseas.
They also stock ND filters, monitor calibration kits, and printing accessories, and I’ve used their support team more than once when I wasn’t sure about which paper to use for my fine art prints.
If you’re into photography as an art form not just shooting but printing and exhibiting Fotospeed is essential.
Tip:They run educational events and webinars too, worth checking if you want to up your editing or printing game.

12. John Lewis Camera Section (Edinburgh)

Location:60 Leith Street (St James Quarter), Edinburgh EH1 3SP
John Lewis
John Lewis
John Lewis might not be the first name you think of for camera gear, but I’ve had some good experiences here, especially when I needed compact models, point-and-shoots, or accessories in a hurry. Their stock is focused on consumer-friendly models, perfect for family use, vlogging, or holiday photography.
The staff here aren’t camera experts, but they’re polite and helpful. I once bought a Panasonic Lumix compact for my niece’s birthday here, and they even gave me tips on how to register the warranty.
They also tend to price-match and offer good return policies, which takes the pressure off buying gear you’re unsure about.
Tip: Check for open-box or clearance deals, these often get tucked behind the counter.

13. Argos (Various Edinburgh Locations)

Locations:
  • Princes Street Collection Point: 1819 Princes Street, EH2 2AN
  • Kinnaird Retail Park (Midlothian): Unit 10, Edinburgh EH16 4UX
  • Craighall Road Collection Point: 83 Craighall Road, EH6 4RR
Argos has saved me more than once when I needed something quickly. While they don’t have high-end cameras, they’re great for tripods, batteries, chargers, SD cards, camera bags, and action cams. I once realised I left my charger behind while packing for a shoot Argos had a replacement in stock and ready for pickup within the hour.
Their Click & Collect system is super fast, and you can find Argos branches in most areas of Edinburgh.
Tip:Look for bundles sometimes accessories come packaged with cameras or GoPros at a better price than buying separately.

14. CeX (Multiple Edinburgh Branches)

Locations:
  • Rose Street: 19 Rose Street, Edinburgh EH2 2PR
  • Cameron Toll Shopping Centre, EH16 5PB
CeX is more about second-hand electronics, but they often have GoPros, DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, and accessories at really good prices. It’s hit or miss, but when they’ve got the right stock, you can save a lot.
I picked up a used Sony Alpha camera here for almost 40% less than it cost new and it came with a 2-year warranty. That warranty is one of the best things about CeX because it gives you peace of mind even when buying older gear.
Tip:Check the website first and use the “Reserve in store” option if you find something you want they go quickly.

15. Cash Converters (Dalry And Leith)

Loactions:
  • Dalry Road: 108A Dalry Road, Edinburgh EH11 2DW
  • Leith Walk: 368 Leith Walk, Edinburgh EH7 4PE
Cash converters
Cash converters
Cash Converters is another place I never expected to find camera gear, but I’ve walked in and found entry-level DSLRs, compact cameras, and even video gear for surprisingly low prices. You have to inspect things carefully this isn’t a specialist store but if you know what you’re looking at, you can sometimes walk away with a great deal.
I once saw a full Canon EOS 600D kit with lens and bag for under £100. That’s perfect for students or anyone starting out on a tight budget.
Tip:Ask to test the camera before buying most staff are happy to let you check buttons and menu functions.

16. Donald Munro / SPD Photo (Dalry Road)

Locaton:246-247 Dalry Road, near Leith Walk
This place is a bit of a hidden gem. It’s located at 246-247 Dalry Road, EH11 2JG, but if you’re not paying attention, you might walk right past it. The shopfront is small and easy to miss some locals even call it the “invisible camera shop.”
The owner, Donald Munro, is a working photographer, and that makes a big difference. He knows his stuff. I’ve chatted with him a few times and found his advice thoughtful and practical not just sales talk. He’s also passionate about film photography, and you’ll find quite a few vintage film cameras, lenses, and accessories inside.
That said, this isn’t your typical modern store. A lot of the gear is kept behind the counter or in the basement, and price tags are rare, so you’ll need to ask if you’re interested in something. It might feel a little old-school, but I personally enjoy that kind of direct interaction it reminds me of how camera stores used to be.
Since Donald still does photography work, the opening hours can be irregular. I've shown up a couple of times when the shop was closed during listed hours. If you’re planning a visit, it’s best to call ahead or message first.

17. Edinburgh Cameras (Order-Only Specialist)

Location:Online-ordered only; no public shop address (specialist service via web order)
Edinburgh Cameras has a long and respected history, it’s known as Scotland’s oldest independent photography retailer. While they used to run a busy retail space, they’ve now changed their model to focus on “order only” service.
What that means is: you can’t walk in and browse shelves anymore, but you can still order any camera gear you need through them. In return, you get something that’s hard to find elsewhere very personal service. When I contacted them for advice about a mirrorless system upgrade, they gave me honest comparisons, walked me through lens choices, and didn’t push for a sale. It felt more like talking to a mentor than a shop.
They can also offer competitive prices especially on mid to high-end gear because they don’t have to keep big stock sitting in-store. Delivery is fast and tracked.
Tip:If you’re not in a rush, and you like dealing with a real expert rather than just clicking buttons, this is a great way to shop.

18. Black & Lizars (Shandwick Place - Camera & Optical Heritage)

Location:6 Shandwick Place, Edinburgh EH2 4RP
Most people now think of Black & Lizars as an optician and that’s true they’re known for glasses and eye care. But what many don’t know is that this brand started out with deep ties to photography and optics, going back to 1895.
The original Lizars store on Maitland Street (now Shandwick Place) was one of Edinburgh’s go-to places for binoculars, telescopes, and cameras. While the focus has shifted to eyewear over time, they still carry optical tools, and some branches have a small selection of second-hand cameras, lenses, or tripods.
It’s not a full-on camera store anymore, but I think it’s still worth checking if you’re nearby, especially if you’re into the history of photography or looking for something unusual like an old field lens or spotting scope.

19. InMotion (Edinburgh Airport - Travel Tech & GoPro Gear)

Location:Inside Edinburgh Airport, after security
InMotion
InMotion
I’ve used InMotion a couple of times when I was flying out of Edinburgh Airport and needed tech gear last-minute. It’s located right in the terminal area, and while it’s not a camera shop in the traditional sense, it’s surprisingly well-stocked for travelers who need photography equipment in a hurry.
You’ll mostly find GoPros, action cameras, selfie sticks, compact tripods, and mobile accessories like power banks and SD cards. Once I forgot my SD card at home before a work trip thankfully, they had SanDisk cards in stock at a decent price.
If you’re looking to pick up something quick before a trip especially for action photography or vlogging this place can save the day. Just don’t expect to find DSLRs or advanced gear here.

20. Skears Photo (Online - Ships To Edinburgh)

Location:Specialist online store based in Cornwall; ships photo equipment across UK including Edinburgh
Skears Photo is one of those online shops I only discovered recently, but now I check them often when I need older lenses or used camera bodies. Even though they’re based down south, they ship to Edinburgh fast, and the service has been very smooth for me.
I ordered a used Nikon D750 from them after comparing prices for weeks. Not only was it in better condition than I expected, but they also included a free sensor clean and checked shutter count, which gave me a lot of confidence. Their prices are usually lower than bigger names like MPB or Wex.
They also stock darkroom gear, filters, batteries, and even parts for cameras, which is rare these days.

21. Analogue Wonderland (Online - Film Lovers Only)

Location: UK-based online film store; ships to Edinburgh.
If you love film photography as much as I do, Analogue Wonderland is a dream. While they don’t have a physical shop in Edinburgh, I’ve ordered from them many times and the delivery is always quick usually within two days.
They stock hundreds of types of 35mm, 120, instant, and experimental film. I once ordered a mix pack just to try different looks, and it helped me figure out which brands work best for my style.
They also have film cases, reusable cameras, and developing kits, and the packaging always includes a personal thank-you note which is a nice touch.
Tip:They offer a loyalty point system called “Wonderpoints,” which helps save money if you shop with them often.

22. T4 Cameras (Online - Trusted For Used Gear)

Location: Online-only specialising in used camera equipment; delivers to Edinburgh.
T4 Cameras is another great online shop I use when I’m hunting for well-priced used cameras or lenses. They don’t always have the biggest selection, but I’ve found some really good condition gear at solid prices.
I once bought a Fujifilm X100F from them, and it arrived so well-packed you’d think it was brand new. They also clearly test everything before shipping, because I’ve never had to return anything. Their phone support is also worth mentioning.
When I had a question about a lens compatibility issue, someone picked up the phone and gave me proper advice without rushing me off. I even used one of their lenses on a trip capturing images of Fife Scotland, and the results turned out beautifully.

23. Clifton Cameras (Online - New Gear And Big Brands)

Location:Online retailer selling new cameras and accessories; ships to Edinburgh
Clifton Cameras has been around for a while, and I use them when I’m looking for brand-new equipment with warranty included. They stock everything from entry-level to professional gear, and often have models in stock that others don’t.
When I was shopping for a Sony A7 IV, most places were out of stock. Clifton had it and shipped it to me in two days, with all the original packaging, warranty documents, and even a discount code for accessories.
They also sell binoculars, drones, and photo editing gear, which makes it a good one-stop shop if you’re into other tech as well.
Tip:Sign up to their newsletter they sometimes send exclusive discounts, especially on bundles.

24. Park Cameras (Online + Showroom)

Location:Based in Kent; online orders deliver to Edinburgh, but showroom is outside Scotland
Park Cameras is one of my all-time favourite online stores. Even though their physical showroom is in England, I’ve ordered from them again and again, especially when I’m looking for high-end lenses or studio lighting gear.
They have a huge stock of brands Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, Sigma, Tamron and what I like most is their product pages. Each one includes sample photos, tech specs, and real advice on who the gear is best for. That helped me when I was choosing between two portrait lenses.
They also offer student discounts, warranties, and fast UK shipping. I usually get my orders in Edinburgh within two working days.
Tip:Look out for their clearance section, it sometimes includes ex-demo gear in perfect condition for much less.

25. Greens Camera World (Online - Used + New Gear)

Location: Online
I first tried Greens Camera World when I needed a backup camera body for a short-notice shoot. I found a used Canon 5D Mark III on their site for a very reasonable price, and I was impressed by how carefully it had been checked and packed.
They carry a mix of new and second-hand gear, including DSLRs, mirrorless, flashes, and studio lights. Their website isn’t flashy, but their service is great, and they give honest condition ratings.
They also carry accessories like straps, memory cards, and camera bags handy if you’re putting together a full kit.
Tip:Their used stock updates weekly. I signed up for alerts so I don’t miss out on rare finds.

26. McGilp Cameras (Scotland-based - Vintage + Repairs)

Location:1 Aberfeldy Terrace, Irvine, KA11 2DQ
I heard about McGilp Cameras from a local film enthusiast, and they’re one of the few Scottish shops still focused on analogue photography. They’ve been around for decades and are well-known for their repairs, restorations, and classic camera sales.
I once took an old Olympus OM-10 to them, thinking it was ready for the bin. They cleaned it, replaced the seals, and brought it back to life good as new. They also have a rotating stock of 35mm, 120, and large-format cameras, plus darkroom equipment.
If you’re into film or you’ve inherited a vintage camera that needs some love, they’re worth contacting.

27. CameraWorld (Online - Big Brands + Edinburgh Shipping)

Location: Online
CameraWorld is another large online shop that’s easy to use, with lots of deals on brand-new camera bodies, lenses, and photo accessories. I’ve ordered from them when I couldn’t find certain items in Wex or Jessops, and their delivery to Edinburgh has always been smooth.
One thing I like is that they often bundle kits with extras, like SD cards, filters, or straps. That saved me a fair bit when I bought a Sony camera body with two lenses and a free battery pack.
They’re also active at UK photography events, which is a bonus if you like in-person browsing.
Tip:Check the “open box” section, it sometimes includes returned items at 10 20% off with full warranty.

28. ProAV (Online - Specialist For Video + Audio Gear)

Location:Online
When I started getting into filmmaking and YouTube content, ProAV became one of my go-to sites. They specialise in pro video gear, so you’ll find things like cinema cameras, lighting rigs, shotgun mics, gimbals, and full studio kits.
I bought my first Rode mic and a budget-friendly LED panel from them, and their support team even helped me compare two lighting kits by email.
They also stock brands like Blackmagic, Atomos, Rode, Aputure, and Zhiyun, which are harder to find in regular camera shops.
Tip:Their video tutorials and gear guides are top-notch worth checking even if you’re not buying.

29. DJI Store (Online - Drones + Gimbals)

Location:Online
I’ve always been cautious with drones, but once I got serious about aerial photography, I turned to the official DJI Store. While you can find DJI products elsewhere, ordering directly from their UK site guarantees warranty, support, and authentic parts.
I got my Mavic Air 2 and extra batteries from them, and it arrived within three days. Their bundles are usually better than buying separately, especially if you’re starting fresh.
You’ll also find their Osmo series gimbals and action cameras, which I’ve used for both travel vlogs and family videos.
Tip:Check their refurbished section, those items are tested, certified, and often much cheaper.

30. Walmart Photo UK (Online - Prints + Photo Gifts)

Location:Online
If you’re looking for prints, canvas enlargements, or photo books, Walmart Photo UK is an easy and affordable option. I’ve used them to print wedding albums and calendars, and the quality is surprisingly good for the price.
They also do passport photos, greeting cards, and framed prints. Turnaround is usually a few days, and their online builder is beginner-friendly.
Tip:Use their seasonal codes they often offer 30-50% off bulk orders.

31. Glasgow Camera Exchange (Occasionally Ships To Edinburgh)

Location: Based in Glasgow; sells online and ships to Edinburgh photographers
Although they’re based in Glasgow, this store deserves a mention. I’ve made the trip out there a couple of times and also had them ship gear to me in Edinburgh. Their shop has a great selection of used DSLRs, lenses, and older film gear, especially Minolta, Pentax, and Canon FD gear.
What stood out most was their attention to detail. They know the history behind their gear and will walk you through how each piece works.
Tip:If you’re after something rare or specific, give them a call they often have gear not listed online.

32. EBay (Used Gear Marketplace - With Caution)

Location:Local peer-to-peer camera gear listings; pickups arranged in Edinburgh
I know eBay isn’t a camera store in the traditional sense, but I’ve picked up vintage lenses, camera straps, and even filters from individual sellers and small camera shops listing there. You just have to be smart, check seller ratings, ask questions, and make sure there’s a return policy.
I once found a Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 in mint condition for half the usual price because the listing was simple and missed some keywords.
Tip:Set search alerts for specific models you’ll get notified when new listings go up.

33. Facebook Marketplace (Local Gear - Meetups In Edinburgh)

Location:Local peer-to-peer camera gear listings; pickups arranged in Edinburgh
When I’m hunting for budget gear or trading items, Facebook Marketplace is surprisingly useful. I’ve picked up two tripods, a camera bag, and a second-hand flash from locals in Edinburgh all for less than I’d pay online.
You do need to meet in person, so I always choose busy public places like the Meadows or coffee shops. The key here is knowing your gear some people list stuff without knowing its value, which can mean good deals.
Tip:Search different keywords like “DSLR”, “photography kit”, “lens” or “Canon” people describe items in different ways.

34. Gumtree (Edinburgh - Local Online Deals For Second-Hand Cameras)

Location: Online
A compact black instant camera with its accompanying power supply and a box of film, laid out neatly on a light brown wooden table
A compact black instant camera with its accompanying power supply and a box of film, laid out neatly on a light brown wooden table
When I’m on the hunt for second-hand camera gear and want to stay local, I often turn to Gumtree. It’s basically a digital marketplace where people in Edinburgh list everything from DSLRs and mirrorless bodies to lenses, bags, and old tripods. Think of it like a more direct version of eBay, no bidding, just messaging the seller and arranging to meet.
I’ve found some great deals this way, like a Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 for nearly half the retail price, simply because someone was clearing out their kit. Another time, I grabbed a used Gorillapod for £10 from someone near Bruntsfield.
What I like about Gumtree is the chance to meet in person, check the condition of the gear, and often negotiate the price. That said, it’s really important to use common sense, always meet in a public place (I usually choose a coffee shop or somewhere well-lit) and test the equipment if you can before handing over any cash.

35. Source Electronics - Euronics (Nicolson Street)

Location:114 Nicolson Street, Edinburgh EH8 9E
Source Electronics
Source Electronics
I came across Source Electronics while walking along Nicolson Street, and it turned out to be a useful little shop. It’s part of the Euronics group, but it feels like a local family-run place. They sell all sorts of electronics, and that includes some digital cameras, memory cards, and accessories.
It’s not a full-on camera store like Wex or Jessops, but if you need something simple or a quick replacement, it’s a good spot to try. They also sell reconditioned or second-hand gear, which can save you a lot of money.
One thing I like is that they repair electronics, including phones, computers, and even some camera parts. I once had a small camera fault fixed here it was quick and cost much less than I expected.
Tip:If you're after budget gear or a quick repair, this shop is worth checking out, especially if you're already in the Southside area.

Author
Callum Fraser isn't just a writer about Scotland; he's a product of its rugged landscape and rich history. Born and raised in Perthshire, with the Highlands as his backyard, his love for the nation's stories was kindled by local storytellers and long walks through ancient glens. This passion led him to pursue a degree in Scottish History from the University of Edinburgh. For over 15 years, Callum has dedicated himself to exploring and documenting his homeland, fusing his academic knowledge with essential, on-the-ground experience gained from charting road trips through the Cairngorms, hiking the misty Cuillins of Skye, and uncovering the secrets of traditional recipes in his family's kitchen. As the Editor-in-Chief and Lead Author for Scotland's Enchanting Kingdom, Callum's mission is simple: to be your most trusted guide. He combines meticulous research with a storyteller's heart to help you discover the authentic magic of Scotland — from its best-kept travel secrets to its most cherished traditional recipes.
