THE OLD SCOTTISH STONE ©

by Robbie Kennedy Bennett
(Codsall)

What should I be thinking?
Or should I say,
As I stand on the coast
At St Andrews Bay.

The homeland of golf
The American voice,
They come to The Kingdom
They come of their choice.

As the waves cover over
The old Scottish stone,
A thought in my mind
A feeling of home.

For Fife a flame will burn
As long as I live I will learn.
Where I was from and who I am
What is the blood
That runs through this man?

Like the flags I am flying
Like the stones I am grey,
I've a bold Scottish passion
That won't wash away.

St Andrews a town that's so proud
A voice in the wind that speaks loud,
‘THE BLOOD IN THAT MAN IS STILL STRONG
TO REMEMBER YOUR ROOTS IS NOT WRONG.’
The clouds may get heavy
The stones may be grey,
The sea tells St Andrews
‘HE WON’T WASH AWAY.’

‘So you tell The Kingdom
And tell all your shores,
It’s as much as it’s mine
As it is yours.’

The Kingdom now answers,
‘WHY DON’T YOU LEARN?
‘WHY DON’T YOU FORGET US?
‘WHY DOES YOUR HEART YEARN?

‘How can I forget you?
I've blood in this land,
Have they stood where I'm standing?
And walked on this sand.
Have they breathed what I'm breathing?
This brisk Scottish air,
Why did they not want him?
Why did they not care?

‘THEY MAY HAVE LOVED HIM
THOUGH HE DID NOT KNOW.’
‘But did someone hurt
To let that boy go?

‘He was born in your land
And he grew strong,
I am his son
And I know I belong.
So you tell your seas
And tell all your shores,
I'll still breathe this air
Even though you shut doors.’

The clouds may get heavy
The stones may be grey,
‘YOU’VE A BOLD SCOTTISH PASSION
THAT WON’T WASH AWAY’.

***
The sun slowly shines over Fife…
It cuts through the clouds like a knife.
It shines on this glorious land
The sea and the beautiful sand.

‘So you tell The Kingdom
And tell all your shores,
It's as much as it's mine
As it is yours.’

***
St Andrews Bay now glistens
As the sea hits the land it listens,
Although I stand here all alone…

They won't cover over this old Scottish stone.

I think you can really call yourself a Scot, Robbie! In fact you are almost a real Fifer.
